I just bought this and it sounds...fine. I don't know what people here are complaining about unless they either got a bad copy, they don't know how to clean dust off their records before playing them or what but I haven't heard any of the problems described by most on here. The surface noise is no worse or better than any other record I've listened to. I have compared it to the CD version and while the improvements in sound are subtle, given that this album is digitally mastered, nonetheless the sound is a bit more dynamic as well as bit warmer (heavier bass, softer treble). I downloaded a vinyl rip of this pressing and ran both the CD/FLAC version and the vinyl rip through a dynamic range meter and the results were as follows:CD/FLACDR Peak RMS Duration TrackDR7 0.00 dB -8.69 dB 2:59 01-The HollowDR7 0.00 dB -8.66 dB 4:06 02-MagdalenaDR6 0.00 dB -10.14 dB 3:26 03-RoseDR6 0.00 dB -7.65 dB 4:07 04-JudithDR7 0.00 dB -8.43 dB 4:48 05-OrestesDR8 0.00 dB -9.98 dB 3:40 06-3 LibrasDR7 0.00 dB -8.04 dB 4:11 07-Sleeping BeautyDR6 -0.10 dB -8.09 dB 3:29 08-ThomasDR9 -0.39 dB -12.74 dB 2:24 09-RenholdërDR7 0.00 dB -8.09 dB 4:35 10-Thinking of YouDR7 0.00 dB -9.77 dB 4:24 11-BreñaDR13 -11.43 dB -28.97 dB 2:21 12-OverVinyl RipDR Peak RMS Duration TrackDR12 -0.29 dB -14.93 dB 2:59 01-The HollowDR10 -2.25 dB -13.90 dB 4:06 02-MagdalenaDR10 -2.06 dB -16.37 dB 3:25 03-RoseDR10 -2.09 dB -13.74 dB 4:06 04-JudithDR11 -1.31 dB -14.91 dB 4:49 05-OrestesDR11 -1.54 dB -14.82 dB 3:37 06-3 LibrasDR9 -2.04 dB -14.07 dB 5:08 07-Sleeping Beauty (Extended Intro)DR10 -2.44 dB -14.45 dB 3:31 08-ThomasDR12 -3.53 dB -19.00 dB 2:21 09-RenholdërDR11 -1.11 dB -14.18 dB 4:34 10-Thinking Of YouDR10 -1.67 dB -15.29 dB 4:22 11-BreñaDR15 -6.45 dB -29.92 dB 2:26 12-Over (Alt.)The higher the "DR" number, the bigger the difference between the softest and loudest sound on that track. That is not definitively indicative of sound quality, but in this case, like I said, I compared the two and the vinyl pressing does have subtle improvements. It's not an album I would use to demo a sound system but if you're looking for something that sounds better than the CD, get this pressing.

Just opened my copy and immediately played side B. Totally quiet, maybe a little distorted in the mix but the pressing seems fine to me. Maybe I got lucky.

This is an example of pressing quality of the 2000s ... I think it was mastered by someone who doesn't care a lot for vinyl sound, it just sounds like a flat digital transfer. The vinyl has sometimes a hiss sound in between the tracks, luckily not audible in the songs (on my copy). Not really recommendable.

I'm stunned by the comments on this release. I just picked this up today, opened it up straight away and put it on. My jaw was wide open, I'm not exaggerating that this is one of the best sounding records I own. It's incredible. I'm wondering if earlier pressings suffered from problems that have maybe been rectified. Either way I'm really impressed.

Hey, is there any way you could digitize even a sample of the audio off your turntable and send to me? I'm stunned at your noting the quality as +++++ and wanna hear how yours is

I have to agree. I just listened to my recently purchased set of this pressing, and it's exquisite.

Interestingly, picked up another copy around 2 years after my initial copy which had the noisy side 2 which was a widespread issue. This new replacement copy is a really quiet pressing throughout. The recording is slightly ‘crunched’ at times with this album. However, the sound is generally pretty much okay. If you can accept that this recording isn’t the most dynamic then this is a good option.

Very bad pressing, it's common among Capitol's "from the vaults".Return it is

Keep in mind the following: This album was horribly mixed from the onset. Having owned the CD multiple times and getting the digital releases, the poor mixing was evident. The Hollow being a prime example. Complaints about this being a terrible pressing are unfounded. It is, however, mediocre. There's not much surface noise on my end, including on side B. But some tracks sound overly distorted. For instance, Rose sounds like it suffers from the loudness wars. The track is much cleaner on CD and digital. on the LP, it's super distorted and it sounds crackly at times. It's a shame because it's a great precursor to Judith, which sounds fantastic on the pressing. Outside of Rose and Thinking of You, it sounds great all around. Clean your records and store them in anti-static sleeves. Clean your stylus before each use. That will eliminate a lot of the hyperbole found here.

Terrible pressing. Period. Do not buy! We'll just have to wait for the next issue

Other comments are true. Great album, but poor pressing with a lot of surface noise, especially on side B. Sound also feels muddy and highly compressed while lacking details.

All the negative comments are true. I've bought the brand new sealed vinyl, and the surface noise is the strongest I've ever heard on a vinyl record. And it's not a matter of a dirty record - cleaning with Okki Nokki didn't help at all. Also, tried another brand new vinyl (same release) - the noise issue is exactly the same. And it's an irony that the noise is strongest on the side B - this side has all the 3 best songs in the album IMO. The sound also lacks details, and is not great overall (compared to the digital version of the album that I have). So, I wouldn't recommend buying this release - better to find an older release, or wait for a new reissue.

One of the worst sounding records in my relitively small collection. In addition to the high noise floor as people have mentioned there's just a lack of clarity. I can't make out the bass or any strings and the cymbals almost sound distrorted. I'm no audiophile but maybe I'm on the path and a release like this at least shows me what it shouldn't sound like. The songs themselves are great though.

Bad quality control. too much surface noise, side B in particular.

good sounding RE overall, although it's too noisy in between the songs - especially on side B

I have this reissue version, but the label on disc one incorrectly identifies the sides... The label says "this side" is side B and "other side" is side A, but the side with the label plays the songs listed on side A. Is this a rare misprint, or are all of the reissues similarly mislabeled?
jorik

Yup - I got slightly confused when the label said Disc One - Side A and Judith started playing .. ah well. Apart from some loudness issues, it's a decent pressing. No noise to speak of on any of the sides ..

Yeah mine is mislabeled the same as the copy you described.

Well, no idea, but I'm here because i have one record correctly identified, but the other one (Side C/D) has a Side A/B label on it.So a misprint, but different than yours.

I also have the original version but I thought it went for the $100 range?? Is it because of all the reissues the price for the original went down?? Bummer.
