Underrated masterpiece for sure. To understand this mess of an album you first have to understand where Boris has been up until this point. They started their career in the doom drone genre. Over fifteen years, they worked their way through sludge, post rock, stoner rock, and even punk several times over. They were at a point in their career where they were looking for something entirely new. In 2006 Boris teamed up with Michio Kurihara to tackle psychadelic music with the creation of the acclaimed but obscure Rainbow. After that they teamed up again to make this record. As you can tell by the album's unique casing, this music is much less straightforward. It feels more like a journey than it does a collection of songs. It will take you a multitude of wild places that most metal bands would never dare to go. In the end though, its a fun and memorable collection and if you have an open mind (and a nice stereo) you'll have yourself a time. The three standouts for me are the whacked-out Message, the emotionally compelling Flower Sun Rain, and the booming nihilistic Untitled.

Oh Boris, why are you amazing? I mean honestly, who else can kick ass so relentlessly? Whether they're making doom dirges or guitar freak-out sessions, Boris sound cooler in ten minutes than most bands do over the course of their carrer. Smile has recieved a lot of negative feedback which I can't understand. I'd pick Smile over Pink any day. I own both the Japanese and US vinyl versions of Smile and I think that each has certain cuts that are better than the other, so mixing and matching is a must. Flower Sun Rain is Summer 2008 as music for me. No song more fully epitomizes sunsets, lucy in the sky, and heartbreak like Flower Sun Rain. Michio Kurihara's guitar on the US mix soars like a comet, leaving trails of fire in its wake. BUZZ-IN and Laser Beam bring the energy early on, but things slow down for the surf rock meets DMT, acid explosion that is My Neighbor Satan. And just so you know they're still as heavy as anyone, Boris team up with Stephen O'Malley for a black-hole jam which drones on for 20 minutes.
