Carl Craig's name has almost become synonymous with Detroit techno -- that unique blend of futurism and soul. With _The Album Formerly Known As..._, he once again sets his footprint firmly in the musical foundation. From the smooth strains of "Technology" to the more frenetic electronic strings of "They Were," Craig never seems at a lack of musical ideas or emotions. "Mind of a Machine," for example, throbs and hisses as it skates along, while "One Day Soon" and "Landcruising" both manage to bring out the soul of the machine. The bright arpeggios of "Sparkle" lend truth the track's title, and Craig ends the album on three beatless tracks that shows he can do as much without percussion as he can with.

At the time of writting this review I don't feel like I will ever regret saying it, but Carl Craig's "The album formerly known as..." time after time comes across as the finest post Y2K techno album I've heard. It embodies on one, thematically and sound wise integrated disc everything I seek for in techno, and is an always welcome reminder of why do I enjoy the genre as much as I do in the first pace. It's well intentional, honest, benign, melodic, and most of all, it's 100% self-reliant, ungoverned and uneffected by foreign trends, meaning its quality cannot be measured within a given historical context, if you follow me. It's just timeless music, which will overcome change, and accept the challenge against the best contenders, coming out head and shoulders above the rest.

2005 has seen some of the giants of "electronica" release new and very exciting material. Add Carl Craig to that list. This new album harkens back to "Landcruising" and "More Songs About Food & Revolutionary Art". This is grand, muscular, symphonic Detroit techno that is as good as it gets. It's 5 stars, a desert island disc.

Sorry but u dont know what you're talking about. This isn't "new material that harkens back to Landcruising". It IS Landcrusing! Just brought up to date a bit and with a couple of added tunes. Surely you'd know this if you'd heard Landcruising!
