Without Any Vocals, This Album Sounds Great

Dr. Dre has never been a great rapper. I don't care for his voice and his lines were/are ghost written by someone else anyway. That said, he has always been a standout producer and beatmaker, even going back to albums like No One Can Do It Better.

Without the vocals, which are really just a distraction at best anyway, you can hear how well produced this album actually was. The beats are very carefully crafted, with little slivers of melody here and there. They are almost minimalistic in approach, but I don't get bored listening to them. This album, in its instrumental form, manages to be very engaging yet relaxing at the same time. I like the fact that these are true instrumentals - they didn't leave the hook/chorus parts in at all.

My copy is on vinyl and comes with no info beyond what's on the record labels. The jacket is just a plain black DJ sleeve with a sticker on it. The pressing quality is pretty good, not the best I've ever seen but nowhere near the worst - probably about average for a contemporary vinyl release.

One of the greatest things the DRE has done in his music career is release the instrumentals of his multi-platinum classic LP, '2001'. I personally prefer this to the original vocal LP, as it shows that Dre is one of the greatest contempory music producers, up threre with people like Phil Spector, George Martin and Quincy Jones.

As Dre's main strength is production, he and Mel Man produce beautiful, timeless beats, that give the songs life and a George Clinton influence, through it all, to give it an extra bit of funk.

Each song that he produces, creates perfect ambience for the theme or rapper, ie, the radio-friendly club hit 'The Next Episode', has a classic western feel with heavy big beat drums. Others such as Xxplosive is a nice, chilled funk jam, while 'Murder Ink', has a creepy, violent haloween feel to it.

Out of mainstream hip-hop/rap's producers, Dr Dre's is definatley at the top. Recommended for those who either loved the original vocal album, as a tool to practice rap, or just to chill out, get a chronic and listen to the hard work gone into the production.

PS: Dre, if you are out there, I hope you will release an Instrumental version of Detox, that would be awesome!
