On the Dr. Strange project, Eric Moncollin, goes into a different direction. Yes the title says "Music for reptiles", but what you get is much more than that: environmental ambient full of warm and organic synth layers, subtle percussions, synth melodies/sounds/etc. and lots of environmental sounds/field recordings. Track 1 and 2 remind me a little bit of FSOL, but only because of its sphere. The production is way different and very environmental, but at the same time it takes you on a trip through the forest because of all these minimal electronic "reptile" sounds accompanied with very nice minimal multi-layered synths in the background. No rhythms. In track 3 and 4 Moncollin is using subtle well constructed percussions which reminds me of the amazing Intergalactic Federation albums on the FAX +49-69/450464 label. For the ones who aren't familiar with I.F., think of early 90's IDM/Ambient dub. The buildup of track 3 is absolutely fantastic. In the second part of this track Moncollin refines every element so smooth. High and deep synths together with the percussion gives it a magical feeling. Great concept, very inspiring. Track 4 reminds me of Richard H. Kirk/Cabaret Voltaire, although with a more ambient flavour. Track 5 starts with the same sphere as track 1 and 2, but this time with synth effects reminiscent of the early 90's ambient synth sounds. A very calm ambient vibe, which reminds me of the early WARP stuff. However Moncollin is using a different method these IDM artists were using, since the focus is on refining the background of his landscape. It gives the music a magical timeless power.Track 6, is more in the same vein as track 3. Although this is maybe even better because of the way the track is evolving. Not many layers are used, but all very strong and organic. The power of leaving things out. Track 7 starts with field recordings and a deep percussion rhythm in the background and beautiful synth sounds as the point to focus on. It feels like diving into the woods at night where a lot of interesting stuff is going on. Many electronic fields are waiting to get discovered.Track 8 is a little more upbeat. For the first time we get a deep bass, minimal snare drums and a percussion rhythm. It stays subtle the whole track, in order to bring the listener a nice ambient dub feeling which slowly evolves bit by bit.Track 9. Last track, only 2.44, but very strong synth work. Suddenly it's over.Original concepts. A combination of ambient and environmental influences together with percussions and IDM sounds. Highly recommended!
