This trio won’t bang on your door! The Göran Lindelöw Trio, with Göran Lindelöw guitar, Nils Wäcklén double bass and Nils Danell drums has been playing together for fifteen years now. They have found their way of tight communication. They trust it. It works. In the long run it works, because the musicianship behind the performances of these songs – eleven composed by Göran Lindelöw, two by Nils Danell – is so well grounded. They have found their way, their language to write music in and the voice to express themselves with. Their style has some of its roots way down in the golden jazz era around 1960. This was a time when a lot of top class American jazz musicians came to Sweden and found enthusiastic audiences. These visits changed the music life of Sweden forever.
The guys in G L 3 grew up with these influences. Take Göran Lindelöw. His playing – inspired of Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery among others – is complete. He does the whole thing, bass line, chords and melody on top with improvisations which he proved in 2013 when he gave himself the impressive task of recording one solo song every Friday, the whole year and published them on his homepage. On this record he omits the bass line in favour of Nils Wäcklén on the double bass, as did Bill Evans for his bass player Chuck Israels. Nils Wäcklén, yes, listen to his melodic bass lines and his fine solo on My Wife and to Nils Danells solo with brushes on Catch the Cat, always swinging! Fine statements within the close partnership of the trio.
In popular music, when you get a new cd with a favorite artist of yours you’ll find 2 or 3 tracks that you go back and listen to time and time again. On this album I find 3 or 4! They may not come the first or the second time you listen through. Why? Well their art has so many carefully considered layers that it grows on you when you hear it a couple of times. And then you have some fine melodies singing in your head. Songs that will come back to you maybe for years to come. Not bad, eh?! Three good jazz men. No, they won’t bang on your door.
