NOT LONG AGO (1992-1995) David Rosenheim was sharing songwriting duties with bass/guitar player Bayete Henderson. Together with Gavin Foster on drums, they wrote lazy indie noise pop that caught the attention of local college radio jocks from KFJC and KZSU almost simultaneously. They released a coupla singles; a 12" ep and the full length "You Are Here." On their second full length Lucky Drive Henderson was replaced on bass by John Murray who co-wrote two of the songs as the band's sound changed to a somewhat more structurally entwined straight-pop format - and noticeably less mired in durge - with particular attention to the quieter dynamics of songcraft.

Now, on "Brave Little Soldier" HUGH are running on a full tank of gas. Pop addicts will delight in the cantabile writing style. Songs like the rocking "Almost as High as You" and "Pretty Good Pop Song" are sure to be the crowd pleasers as is "Cowboy" (which I was lucky enough to hear live and let me to you it is an infectious tune), "Big Shot I" or the epic "Ashtrayland." David Rosenheim (vocals, guitars and keyboards) has found his clairvoyance, as the band I've always secretly rooted for finally has something big to say.

The short but beautiful, "Goodnight, Captain" could very well be the bookend for SLINT's "Good Morning, Captain." The eight minute plus closer "The Cruel Past" is a welcome experimental instro that adds to the shear "make-out" of the record. With ace production from Greg Freeman at Lowdown Studios, HUGH just might get the recognition deserving of a talented and original rock band.
