Thankfully I do have the original Bowie mix. This new mix is unlistenable. Is the worst (re)mastering I've ever heard. Dynamic range absolutely terrible. Don't waste your money on the 96/97 release.

This album RULES!I don't care that it's brickwalled, it's more exciting to me than many CDs that don't have all this compression.Yes I would choose the original mix over this, but this is still fantastic even if mastered too loud.The alternate vocals in some songs are also great, like in Gimme Danger. A MUST for all REAL Stooges fans!!!

This Iggy Pop remixed version of one of the all time great albums is an absolute sonic disaster. It has an official dynamic range of zero making it one of the worst sounding CDs ever recorded. The clipping and audible white noise are off the charts. Do yourself a giant favor and go on a search and destroy mission to locate the original Bowie mix of this recording. The accidental genius of the Bowie mix is what gave birth to punk rock as we know it.

, thanks for the technical explanation to a 'work of vandalism - by one of its creators'....but over 30 years on I still don't know the answer to ..... I have an original UK '73 copy of Raw Power & the mix of Search & Destroy is very different to the '77 & 80s vinyl pressings that I originally had - the rest of my '73 pressing is basically that same 'Bowie mix' that we all loved (apart from Iggy!) but have all the original '73 versions got this different mix of Search& Destroy that I haven't heard anywhere else?

above comment nails it. this is one of the worst remasterings/remixes of the loudness wars started in the 90s. Worse than originals mastered that way too. Just horrendous. Don't know what Pop was smoking when he claimed this is good. I remember buying this and couldn't believe how horrible it sounded. The distortion makes some compressed techno and hip hop tracks sound like they have orchestra music depth and dynamics. Probably one of the worst professionally released mixes ever. The thing I can think of that even comes close are the Iron Maiden remasters from the 2000s or the 20th anniversary Nevermind CD, but they are nowhere near this flat, bland, and distorted.

(reply to eggbert1963) The digital mastering is an atrocity. Look up "loudness war" or "brickwall mastering". The '97 remaster of Raw Power is a poster child of the syndrome.
