This release is just mad, starts mad, gets weird, goes all funny for a while, then has a zany period, followed by some nuttiness. Doo-wop ends an audio journey into the heart of Squarepusher's early jazz/radiophonics crossed with a sprinkling of soulful muzak buried under a ton of playful noodling. An absolute must for those looking out for experimental electronica. Eep!

Jamie Lidell's debut, MUDDLIN GEAR, came via Warp and Spymania, Squarepusher's former label, and it's the latter influence that shows. It's chaotic, filled with random squelches and noise, such as on the vocal snips on "Untitled" or the electro overload of "In Inphidelik" or hard rock interlud of "Da Doo Doo." Many tracks, though, do show a jazz influence. "Said Dram Scam," for instance, amidst the untidiness, maintains a fascinating drum pattern, while the bass on "The Cop It Suite," seems transported straight from a smoke-filled jazz bar. "Daddy's Car" has a hint of the R&B soul for which Lidell would become known later -- though filtered and set low here. But he tries his hand at other styles as well, from the pure drone of "Dröön_99" to the barbershop quartet of "Daddy No Lie." An interesting start, no doubt.
