For their only album, the Jazzupstarts ask ARE YOU OK?, and judging from the sweeping breaks on "Introducing," the answer seems to be, 'Sure!' There's plenty of acid jazz on "Over and Over" but the dreaminess of "Moving Against the Tide" speaks more clearly. "This is the New Style" gets a little more growly, and the deep strings on "Everything" hint at some mystery beneath the surface. But the more upbeat breaks of "DJ Skills" brings the party back up, just as "Been Here Before" drops the mellow. A psychedelic feel creeps into "Give Wisdom" but it's the gentle bounce on the closer "Chinese Penguins" that helps wraps things up with a pretty bow. A capable album, though nothing too exciting.
