Dusty Groove review:
Obscure batch of jazz vocal tracks from Chicago, cut for the rare Penny label, and packaged in a groovy gatefold cover that also has a booklet attached to the middle. Lots of the tracks have sort of a Johnny Hartman/Billy Eckstine vocal style, but there's also 2 great versions of Babs Gonzales monologues – "A Dollar Is Your Only Friend" and "Broadway 4 A.M." – that are very much in the spirit of Babs' classic work! Johnny Pate put the session together, and also did the arrangements – and the music has a nice late club feel, with some very cool piano and bongos. (source: http://www.dustygroove.com/item/17940)
