Back in 1998 when I was 17 years old, I volunteered to DJ my high school's student dance. I had no idea how to DJ at the time, but the school was happy to not have to pay for a professional DJ. The DJ booth had two single-disc CD players and a full size mixing console. Zero DJ equipment or beatmatching capabilities. Nonetheless, I did the best I could, bouncing around between acts like Juno Reactor, Orbital, KMFDM and other stuff that the mainstream kids of the school absolutely despised. More than half of the students waited outside in rebellion as teachers forced me to give up the music so someone else could play cheesy mainstream hip hop and pop. That lasted for a half hour or so, and then I got back on towards the end of the night. Guess what I closed with? Two Telephone Calls and an Air Raid by Shaun Imrei. This track is absolutely nuts and I was in a "fuck it" kind of mood at that point. The lights came on, the few remaining teachers and students hurried out the door, and it was just my closest friends and a couple other students left on the dancefloor. The looks on their faces when this track was blasting over the speakers was all the validation I needed. Screw those mainstream kiddies!

I will never forget this track, and while Shaun Imrei is barely known these days, it was his relentless, over the top track that played a big part in me eventually becoming a DJ later on. Thanks Shaun, and rest in peace.
