I can only imagine myself what must have been going on during the recording of "Mammoth". The original demo was meant for a different record company but it was rejected. The ultimate record company, EMI-Bovema, considered the five-minute piece too long; it had to be cut in half.

The idea for the finally recorded version was from producer Gerrit-Jan Leenders: probably the song was too English or too American, he thought of adding something typically Dutch. When the band members became aware of what Gerrit-Jan was up to, they were ablazed.

"What? What are you doing with that thing? It does not even fit in the studio!"
"Then we'll record it outside, on a separate track! We'll try to get it in-sync with what you guys recorded inside!"

Gerrit-Jan came with a BARREL ORGAN, as found on numerous Dutch week markets and in carrousels on annual fairgrounds. The organ, named "Flamingo", was supplied by Perlee, one of the major forces in the Dutch barrel organ business.

According to Ton Scherpenzeel, it was a hell of a job to get everything in key and in tune, and even in the final recording, both takes are still not entirely in key. Although the addition of barrel organ received positive resonance among pop and rock critics, the general public regarded it merely as a gimmick, and the song only came to No. 18 in the Dutch chart.
