A killer album – Lou St. Paul’s parallel project to Winters Bane

Released in 2017, BRINK OF DESTRUCTION is the debut studio album from Akron-based Kill Procedure. The mastermind behind Winters Bane, Lou St. Paul, functions in the same capacity with Kill Procedure. The difference between the two bands is that Lou is the sole singer in Kill Procedure rather than Ripper Owens and Alexander Koch, who sang on HEART OF A KILLER (1993) and REDIVIVUS (2006) respectively.

BRINK OF DESTRUCTION could arguably be considered the third Kill Procedure album seeing as how Winters Bane albums SEASON OF BRUTALITY (1995) and GIRTH (1997) -- both with Lou on vox -- are now considered Kill Procedure albums. The latter has even been re-released with the Kill Procedure logo on the cover. The band’s name, by the way, was taken from the song “Kill Procedure” from GIRTH.

The music is akin to Deadly Blessing, Death Angel and Megadeth with vocals paralleling Mustaine, but notably superior. While it’s hard to beat Ripper on vox, Lou is just as good in his own unique way and I prefer him to Alex Koch, who ain’t no slouch. Anyway, if you favor the style of these bands I highly encourage picking up BRINK OF DESTRUCTION. Lou obviously built-up a lot of catchy riffs in the eleven years since REDIVIVUS; all the compositions flow naturally and are very hooky.

Standout tracks include “Season of Brutality,” which originated with Winters Bane’s unreleased album of the same name; it features a moving melodic mid-break. The title track is another top song, reminiscent of Ultimatum, as is “Mask of the Villain” with its distinguished (higher) riffing. Other favorites are: The opener “Hate Spilled Over,” which is reminiscent of Deadly Blessing; the driving “Trioxynon,” which slows down for the bridge/chorus & beyond; the Death Angel-ish “Spells Death,” which starts doomy; “Dead Man Walking;” and the closer “All the Pain” with its head-turning midsection.
