Review from my KRAutrock's Arabian Nights feature in Audion #46 (2002)...
Their second album WINTRUP, named after their new home, was a much calmer light-hearted album, more song-based, composed and carefully balanced, yet still eclectically Kraan. With each of the six tracks they pushed at a new different angle on the Kraan sound, Silver Wings being a more accessible opener, followed the poignantly witty lyrical Mind Quake which seems to be autobiographical! After this, we get to the serious stuff, where Kraan go into complex mode, pitting their fuzz-wah-sax and guitar leads against the most extraordinary of rhythm sections. It soon becomes apparent, when listening to early Kraan, that every instrument is treated as a soloist playing against and along with the other instruments. Hellmut Hattler is said to have started the trend of lead bassists! Even the drums amount to more than a rhythm set, and conversely the guitar plays the rhythm, the songs bury themselves in the music, and the whole concept of normal musical arrangement gets turned on its head! Intriguingly, the album ends with a song called Jack Steam, a dedication to their former selves, hinting at where they came from.
