The Macarena, perhaps one of the cheesiest songs ever made - yet it was so popular. Every child of the Western world who was between the ages of 4-17 in the 90s probably knows this song, and they probably all know the dance too!

From its simple synth intro (which sounds a bit like something from a pedestrian crossing), to its rubbish lyrics ("When I dance they call me Macarena/And the boys, they say que soy buena/They all want me, they can't have me/So they come and dance beside me") this tune stormed the charts reaching number-one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and staying there for 14 weeks.

Prior to the Bayside Boys remix (which adds english lyrics) it was released entirely in Spanish and was a hit in Spain and Mexico (in 1993).

There was also the iconic (line) dance that went with the song.

The song really is rubbish, but it's part of the 90s (and my childhood) that many people will remember for a few more years at least - perhaps it will even be seen as an icon of the time.
