Though Mac had been playing and releasing music since at least 2008, this is his first 'serious' album. And boy did he come through. Every song is perfect. From the too-catchy-to-be-real opening hook to the final few seconds of still-rolling tape that give us a glimpse into the intimate bedroom conditions under which the album was conceived, this is a pure reflection of a flawed human, in all of its smudged, bedraggled splendor. And though it appears to give off a simple glow, the true nature of this reflection is nothing if not complex. The songs have the jovial appeal of a children's story, but a quick glance at the lyrics reveals an incredulous doodler, mapping out the details of his own darkness. The one thing he is most confident in, is the fact that he's really nothing special. This sanguine self-assuredness gives his music a personality that could not be invented or mimicked by anyone less authentic.
