On balance, Mason Proffit's "Wanted" is a really good country-rock album -- not only do they have the lugubrious, slightly corny feel of "genuine" country down pat, they also know how to cut loose and rock out in that clomping Sixties style. Their biggest fault is that the vocalist/lyricists, the Talbot brothers, were schooled in the folk scene; their bloodless, awkwardly phrased "denunciations of the Vietnam War"/"pleas for everybody to get together and love each other right now"/"hectoring adolescent rants against conservatism" and quivering voices could have come right out of 1963. Luckily they put a band together in the time when country-rock fusion was ascendant, and their songwriting (structures, tunes, arrangements, rhythms) is fantastic -- in my book, an "It's All Right" or a "Sweet Lady Love" or the last three minutes of "Two Hangmen" is more than enough to excuse a "You Finally Found Your Love" or a "Buffalo" or (Lord help us) the first two minutes of "Two Hangmen." Look for two minutes on YouTube and you'll find a group or a solo performer out there covering Mason Proffit songs, bringing them back into the canon. I really like this one and I think you will too.
