Like many soul singers O.V. Wright started his career as a member of various gospel groups. This 45 was his first secular record and his only release on the memphis-based Goldwax label. Due to contractual reasons he returned to Duke Records subsidiary Back Beat in 1965, where he started recording with producer Willie Mitchell in 1967.
"There Goes My Used To Be" is a lovely soul floater with vocal backing by The Keys.
But it was the flipside "That's How Strong My Love Is" that really laid the foundation for O.V.'s reputation a one of the most desperate and haunting southern soul voices of all time. The emotional commitment and intensity which fuelled his performance was clearly derived from gospel music and lacks all "pop" sophistication.
"That's How Strong my Love Is" was later covered by none less than Otis Redding. A great live version of the song can be heard on the posthumous "O.V. Wright Live" album.
