Don't you love it when the cover of an album looks spot on for the music inside? Not many albums I know have achieved such nice synergy but Inside Voices is certainly one of them. The deep blue cover strongly reflects of the immerse sounds that you will get yourself sucked into once you press play. The cover tells you what you will feel when you hear the music. It is music for dreams. Music for stargazing. Music for laying down on a meadow up in the mountains in twilight, just taking a deep relaxing breath and looking at the forest around you. Life is good music!

I’ve been writing about music for what now seems almost a decade. And even so, I must tell you, the closer I come to its essence, the further I seem from its reach. Every listen is always a new venture into the sounds, spaces and mind of the composer as source. I also don’t know why I usually get taken aback when ambient artists create rhythmic works, or in some cases vice versa. This was the case when this past summer I learned of a new record by Oliver Lieb, whose techno and trance records decorate my vinyl wall since the late 90s.Oliver Lieb is known by the dance scene by many monikers and projects. His most notable singles under the L.S.G. alias have appeared on Superstition, Hooj Choons, and Black Series labels. His very own Maschine imprint was used as an outlet to explore a slightly different sound post his separation with Superstition. But on Inside Voices, released by the Irish Psychonavigation records, this Frankfurt based techno mastermind approaches a very different aesthetic, one which will surely appeal to the followers of Headphone Commute.Inviting us into his world with “Surface Tension” in two parts, Inside Voices is a synth based space dive into the universe of resonating echoes, modular permutations and deep flowing rhythms. The headroom is expansive, hypnotic and surreal. Microscopic particles bounce off their reverberated counterparts and immediately dissolve into the voluminous and elastic universe. Landing on this sonic macrocosm we enter a kaleidoscopic trance from which it is impossible to wake up. And we drift…If, as a child, you too have spent many hours lying with your eyes closed listening to “space music,” imagining yourself conquering alien planets, in hopes that the future will bring even more extravagant sounds, then know that you have arrived. Although Inside Voices does not particularly convey interplanetary travel, I can’t help but dust off my helmet and set out on my long beloved voyage. If, by some chance, this record managed to slip pass your radar, be sure to recover from your oversight, especially if you’re a fan of works by Pete Namlook, Future Sound of London, System 7 and the KLF.

Oliver Lieb third ambient outing. Do you need anymore else? It's fucking spectacular. That will suffice.

This is definitely a 90s sounding ambient record. Whether Lieb does not want to deviate or can't deviate much from what he was known for in the 1993-2000 period long time Lieb fans will find this cd strangely recognizable on who was the maker. There are a few transitions that scream very similar to In Too Deep by LSG. Just for about a minute a few different times. And that's not a bad thing certainly. But it's an updated song but still in the same vein. There are certainly some awe inspiring parts like track 6. Immense sounding. Like a supernova is being formed in front of you. Sci-fi like Lieb does so well. This sounds like something he's making from the heart. The music that really moves him. Like he shut the studio door and turned off all the lights and pressed record. It's very fine ambient cd. Anyone from the 90s ambient scene should have this. Excellent space music for your dreams...

With more than 300 singles and albums including remixes for Faithless, Moby, Snap, Yello, Human League, Mory Kante, Utah Saints to name a few, he made it in the premier league of international producers and keeps surprising and amazing people with his extraordinary sounds and diversity.In the early 90’s Oliver produced two critically acclaimed Ambient records (Constellation & Music To Films w/ Dr.Atmo). ’Inside Voices’ perfectly completes this trilogy of Ambience and in years from now it will no doubt be held in equal esteem alongside it’s predecessors.
