Hot on the heels of the successful first installment of Real Deals, Patrik Skoog follows up with part 2, another hard funk fused journey into his world. Opening with Returning, a tough true to the form techno work-out, in the truest fashion of labels like Compund, Planet Rhythm or Submissions, lacing it with thickly layered, harsh military percussion designed for some exquisite DJs who like to hammer it down – properly. The effective percussion withdrawal halfway deep and the following flying entrance back in to the loop only reinforce its effectiveness in clubs!
Flip over to side B where things kick off with in the early Template sound, alla Jack Mackrel, with washy percussive edits, but then Masked boosts it up with the main booming kick, which eventually dominates the cut. With a few dark twists and turns, Masked is more funk orientated than Returning, still packing an incredibly groovy bass and heavily reliant on tribal percussion, yet the final outcome is not as hard.
Divide opens up with some dark strings before erupting into a hypnotic groove, totally different in style than the previous numbers, showing Skoog’s diversity in producing techno. Filling the air with hypnotic percussion and incontrovertible groove, it’s a serious crowd pleaser, especially when the vocal snippets kick in, and get emphasized by the occasional eruption of the floating synth passages straying around the background.
Returning totally does it for me here. This is worth buying for that track alone, definitely the best track in the Real Deals series. Also, this 12” is the prime example of high quality tool techno. Those who think it’s too trite or utilitarian due to its obvious club orientated function, I dare you to make it better. Hell, if making great party techno music was as simple as some deem it is, we’d all be million dollar stacking entrepreneurs by now…
If you are after quality banging techno, which at no time overdoes it by entering some dull schranz territory, you should seriously look no further than this. Returning is a DJ tool for the ages.
