In 1972 to 1973, Phil Ochs was traveling the world, visiting various countries in Latin America, and later, Africa. During his stay in Africa, he decided to get some session players together and record two songs (Phil was notoriously cheap, and he booked the session as a way to underwrite his traveling) in an African studio. While many write these recordings off, I find them interesting. They both have a good beat, and you can hear Phil on vocals on "Bwatue". It's also important to note that Phil, not intentionally, became one of the first "rock" musicians to record what would become afrobeat/world music. Released at the time only in Africa (I've never seen a photos of the original labels, so I can't confirm or deny this - I can find little to no evidence of it's release), it was later issued in a limited edition of 1,000 copies by a Phil Ochs fan club in Canada. For those whom want to hear both tracks, but can't track down the 1993 7" (I'm not going to begin to ask you to find the original 45!), both were issued for the first time on CD on the 2xCD UK Phil Ochs compilation "American Troubadour" (a highly recommended CD set, as it is an overview of Phil's A&M-era recordings, with many unreleased live songs).

I have seen a photo of the original labels. The original single was on ebay roughly 4-5 years ago. I believe it ended up selling for over $400 - well out of my range, sadly.I do have the picture saved somewhere, albeit the quality is low. Once I find it I'll try and piece together an entry for the original release.
