Perfectly constructed pop songs elevated even further by the addition of Phil Spector's heralded "Wall of Sound" technique, "Back to Mono" captures each and every original recording from Philles Records. Released on digital format for the very first time in 1991, this four-disc compilation marked the definitive way to experience Phil Spector's genius in its exhaustive entirety. Perhaps too thorough (a handful of tracks are dispensable despite there being a few crucial omissions) and '60s-centric for those more appreciative of and familiar with the musical visionary's overlooked foray into '70s superstar production for John Lennon et al, this box set obdurately spotlights the seminal Philles recordings and productions for such artists as The Ronettes, Darlene Love, Righteous Brothers, The Crystals, and Ike and Tina Turner. Essentially, this box set collects the best work of the most relevant acts of the 1960s, particularly Tina Turner, whose sterling "River Deep Mountain High" foreshadowed her talents beyond Ike's influence.

Spector's enveloping and timeless Wall of Sound is present and correct on the majority of the material, hence why his uncharacteristic post-1969 work does not feature, since this set focuses primarily on a specific era during which singles formed the basis of popular music. And each selection appears to have been painstakingly remastered, grouped together and compiled chronologically for maximum enjoyment, with the final disc consisting of the label's only legendary album: "A Christmas Gift For You", the manifestation and culmination of Spector's unparalleled musical ingenuity, mastery and technical expertise.

If you desire the totality of the Philles Records output but lack the original singles on vinyl, then this box set is for you; replete with bonus booklet, button, and remastered sound, "Back to Mono" is the only overview of Spector's peerless career as a music mogul worth owning. I would also recommend this extensive collection to those looking to find the apex of 1960s pop, however, expect to hear a plethora of unfamiliar tracks far less accessible than the ubiquitous "Be My Baby" and "Da Doo Ron Ron".
