The Pulsars' Inland Empire EP starts off with an instrumental synthesizer track, "Romp And Frolic", that sounds like it was off of some Takako Minekawa album. The second track, "Inland Empire", is very Kratfwerk-like, and although lacking electric guitars it still manages to sound quite ample and solid.

I find a bit of industrial influence in "Logo", the third song on this EP. It is a very sophisticated and stylish song, even though it is in its core a sing-along indie rock anthem. The Pulsars were always very clever and aware in their lyrics, and this song does not make an exception. In fact, the band's social commentary is at its wittiest here.

"Perfect" changes the course a bit, sounding like a nod to Depeche Mode and bands alike (and that's not the first time the Pulsars nodded towards Mute Records' artists). "The Freeze" continues on the same ground. Both of the songs are, at first listen, very hard to recognize or remember melody-wise, but after a few listening sessions you really get into their delicate soundscapes. They are an essential part of the Pulsars' output.

The EP ends with another remix of the band's "big hit" "Suffocation". I just don't get it why it had to be included here. It is sonically an outsider on this CD. Maybe the record label (Pioneer Japan) thought that if they put a song off the band's debut album (1996) on this fantastic EP, it might make people interested in the much less solid longplay as well. Don't really know.

In my books (or records, in this case), the Pulsars' Inland Empire EP is a landmark for synthesizer-driven indie pop/rock (or, should I say, the original New Wave Revival). It is a shame that it was only released in Japan.
