Notes

From the liner notes: Queen's performance has always been a complete show in every sense, and many of the group's special sound, lighting and screen ideas, initially dismissed by some as "excessive" are now praised as "revolutionary". This video is an up-to-date compilation of the original films made to accompany Queen's hits since 1974, except "Killer Queen" which was especially shot for this video cassette. The films are set out in chronological order, enabling us to trace the development of both the music and the performances which together represent not only the best known hits but also their "Greatest Flix".

Running time 60 mins. No Age Restriction.

Erratum: The track sequence on the sleeve is incorrect. "We Will Rock You" is listed before "We Are The Champions" while the fast/live version of "We Will Rock You" isn't mentioned at all. From back cover:

"Dispatch war rocket Ajax, to bring back his body!"

Originally released at the same time as the "Greatest Hits" album, this chronologically-correct collection (which is just the way they should be) does feel a tad disjointed (particularly if you know the album backwards and have it burnt into your cranium), simply because of the somewhat different track selection and accordingly, the different track sequence. Missing from the album release, for instance, are videos for "Now I'm Here" and "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy" whilst in their place we do have "Tie Your Mother Down", "Spread Your Wings", a live version of "Love Of My Life" and even two versions of "We Will Rock You": the official winter/garden version as well as a great and unlisted live one (commonly known as the fast/live one).

Although this is not a poor compilation by any stretch, with rare exceptions, most promos are basically little more than performance videos - be it in the studio or live on stage. Thusly, to the uninitiated it could almost appear to be lousy - by today's standards, almost a quarter-century later (and this only because of more emphasis being placed on the damn music video as opposed to the song that it's based on or ought to support).
Meanwhile, the supposedly-new video for "Killer Queen" is hardly a promo video but rather just an introduction to this compilation, consisting of a collage of photos, video snippets and some background info on the band members. John Deacon's favourite drink is tea, you know...

Queen are furthermore widely credited for being the "inventors" of the promo video. Despite being a huge fan of their's, this compilation wouldn't have led me to believe that.
But, such are pre-MTV promo videos... just compare Greatest Flix II!

Be that as it may, its re-released update on DVD is way up on my shopping list since I can't wait to hear "Somebody To Love" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" in glorious 5.1 splendour!

My favourite video here is the terribly sad, emotional and part-animated "Save Me".

Magnifico!
