One of the lost arts in music is the solo master of the theatre. Using skills passed down hand to hand over generations a select few of the early 70's singer-songwriters chose to make themselves the center of the universe and to play theater roles to their audience.
Each song was an individual concept, which goes into the other lost art, songwriting, the way all songs used to be written.
So since songs stood stronger for individual concepts, no props were even necessary.
Randy Newman could act out his song and be whoever he wants. So the real lesson in this album lies in his mastery over the live audience. He did not invent it, he mastered it. It was not that difficult given the framework.
The ultimate such song which riveted my own attention on Newman's methodology on stage is not on this album. It is "God's Song", where Randy actually simultaneously plays the roles of God and mankind bantering. His irreverent characterization of God as simply amused by how insane we all are... I figured if you can get on stage with no props, just you and a piano, and pull off an act like THAT, you are capable of doing just about anything in the whole universe.
But these 12 songs and the live performance bring Newman's ability to provide continuity as he did this to light also.
