I'll be honest. I remember this album coming out and being like... fuck techno is getting really boring. Where were the hallucinogenic elements of Cristian Vogel and AFX? This tunes on this album, and that of early Surgeon were a lot more repetitive and heavy than the other stuff that was around. After it (and the first purpose maker) came out everyone started making loop based techno, yawn. I didn't know what to make of it... and I hated the copy cats.Fuck me though, the downwards stuff has stood the test of time. I still listen to this stuff regularly. There is something special... angular, and raw about the album and its grooves. And with it, there is a simplicity, a flow to the tracks. No frills, right. Lets just get to the action and let it go.

I was fortunate enough to witness REGIS airing some new material in the first few hours of 1998, and must say that KARL O'CONNOR's critics, who have been saying that REGIS had been usurped as flavour of the year in the Hardcore club scene should know that the sound IS maturing. A brilliant metamorphosing set with PETER SUTTON creating washes of keyboard over an insistent non-stop rhythm. Therefore this collection of earlier works (available as a 12" set or on the home-stereo-friendly CD) is quite literally a record of their sound as it was in '96 & '97. Although quite clearly their sound is pure Hardcore Techno, O'CONNOR's Industrial roots show through - this is without a shadow of a doubt machine music, set at such a hectic pace that points of focus and reference seem to dilate and transform as you listen to it's hypnotic progress, a little like that picture of two faces becoming a vase, then returning to two faces again as you stare at it. No one track is particularly different to the others - all are compressions of straight-as-a-die drum machine and whirling, whorling, churning sequencer. The sheer force, drive and relentless single-mindedness of this music might be traced back to the likes of early SUICIDE, although the Rock'n'Roll elements have been suppressed to the point of extinction (and if ever you had the opportunity to wade through this man's record collection, you'd find an eclectic assortment of musics INCLUDING some rootsy Rock). None of the tracks are overlong - none really outstay their welcome, and the use of old Analogue Synths over newer, cleaner, more gutless Digital sounds gives it an edge and excitement. I've a feeling that REGIS are about to move on - so buy this, enjoy club music at home and wait for new developments.Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
