I'm a big fan of off-kilter techno, and things don't get more off-kilter than with Repeat/Repeat's debut, SQUINTS. From the first wobbly tones and altered vocal samples of "Flip Flop," the duo take their techno to strange, fascinating places, and you can't help but listen, agog, like a scientist discovering something new under a microscope. "Loops And Boundaries" goes for a more meditative mood, with its aching guitar, though the beat is no less insistent, and "Crocodile" goes for shiny tones. "Carpark (Second Edition)" finds a nice balance between the deep and bright tones, and "Wassily" similarly merges an echoing rhythm with an almost angelic top melody. "Why Must" starts off rather mellow, but then an alternate tone comes in, and the track veers into a new, darker direction, a path that's echoed with "Home Stop Welcome." My favorite, however, is the "Glass," with a cock-eyed melody harmonized with a synthesized steel pan tone. The track never loses its rhythm, and the repeated but varied vocal sample becomes a rhythmic element in itself. This is an album that I put on repeat, and then repeat again.
