Tracklist

Meditations On A Theme By John Blow
Composed By – Sir Arthur Bliss
A.1 Introduction "The Lord is my Shepard": "I Will Fear No Evil". Largamente - Agitato in alternation. Woodwind cadenzas accompanied by sheep bells alternating with chromatics on brass.
A.2 Meditation I "He leadeth me beside the still waters". Allegro moderato, ma tranquillo; nine-eight time, lightly scored.
A.3 Meditation II "Thy rod and staff, they comfort me". Allegro deciso: two-four time
A.4 Meditation III "Lambs". Scherzando: dotted-note figure derived from the last phrase of Blow's tune.
A.5 Meditation IV "He restoreth my soul". Allegro: extended movement in twelve-eight time
A.6 Meditation V "In green pastures". Larghetto: a ternary movement, in which a central section (andante tranquilo) where a drumroll is persistant, is flanked by harp arpeggios. The coda becomes agitated and leads into the interlude.
A.7 Interlude "Through the valley of the shadow of death". Molto agitato: scored with much percussion.
A.8 Finale "In the house of the Lord". Moderato e deciso. Heralded by bells, Blow's tune arrives in E major ( a tempo un poco maetoso) but leads to a quiet close to the sound of the sheep bells.

Notes

As far as I know this is a first edition copy of Lyrita SRCS.33 - it has 'deep groove' labels and the stamper numbers are 1K/1K. However, it may not - at least technically - be a first edition copy, as the text 'An Original Lyrita Recording First Published In 1966' is printed on the labels. Also, the text 'Published and © by Lyrita Recorded Edition, England, 1966' is printed on the back cover. Corrections are welcome.Recorded 3 - 4 January 1966 in Kingsway Hall, London

"A LYRITA recorded edition, released exclusively in Australia by World Record Club."

Australian WRC pressing, sourced from original stampers and featuring unique sleeve art. "S/4535" on sleeve, "S-4535", at left, on green 'strobe' labels. Not issued in mono. Offered again as an 'ambassador' LP in December 1969 - by this time, "S-4535" might be expected to be found on the right of the labels...

The picture on the front was later re-used for S/5320.
