Was this release remastered for vinyl? A lot of 90s records just used the CD masters for their vinyl releases. My copy sounds great! Very quiet and flat..almost makes me think Rainbo is cleaning up their act?

It was. And the result is impressive. A vast improvement over the original pressing, which used the same compressed files for the cd version.

Man I've got to disagree with rchecka here -- this is not only a fantastic remaster; I'd go so far as to say it is one of the single most impressive sounding records in my collection. But then again, I thought the Superunknown remaster was pretty bad and rchecka liked it so who knows...to each their own!

For me, nothing wrong with this reissue. Sounds good on my system. I agree the nuances do stand out more but IMO that's a good thing. Each to their own though.

Unlike the recent Superunknown remastered vinyl reissue this is a terrible remaster. Sometimes it's better to just leave well enough alone rather than try to fix what wasn't really broken in the first place just for the benefit of a hype sticker that says "Remastered." They took this recording and brought all the subtle quieter nuances to the front making it way too loud and fatiguing on the ears. I bought this and sold it as soon at a loss. I'll stick with the CD or buy the original pressing if I can ever find one priced right.

With the exception of Badmotorfinger all the Soundgarden reissues have been too hot, just like King Animal. Sad state of affairs. Badmotorfinger was already super dynamic so although it lost 5dB of dynamic range...it started with 13 whereas DOTU was already at 10...so the original CD sounds very good but the new remaster is pretty cranked. I originally thought the new remastering was more dynamic but that was before I listened to it and realized it was just a vinyl rip incorrectly labelled as an HD Tracks release so I had thought based on the DR log it was finally the remaster we all wanted...nope, it was a DR7 slamfest.Hopefully some day an audiophile label like Analogue Productions, Audio Fidelity, MOFI, ORG Music, Intervention Records or Analog Spark will get a short license to release all the Soundgarden albums and we'll get the all analogue, audiophile-masterings this material so richly deserves.Until then, the best sounding SG releases in each case to my ears are the original CDs, although BMF is passable (as is the remix of Temple of the Dog...remixed because the original stereo master couldn't be found only the multis)

I know about the Rainbow pressings issue history, however this is not really a matter of pressing quality unless Rainbow themselves pressed it too hot. This is a loud sounding remaster, the remaster itself brought out too many background noises, that's nothing I think we can blame Rainbow for. Sometimes noises like fingers against frets are not supposed to be compressed and brought forward, that's how this sounds. It literally causes listener fatigue when too much is going on in between the intended beats. A classic case of can't leave well enough alone for the sake of a "Newly Remastered from the Original Tapes!" hype sticker. I would have loved a simple reissue without messing with the original masters but everyone thinks they can improve on what the last guy did and in this case that's what this appears to be.

Maybe so, but this can be done with success if the right people are doing the mastering. Remastering it from the original tapes is only better if the "right people" are on that job. There are many factors here.

Its well documented the original is just the CD pressed to vinyl.

Would love to hear from someone how these sound. Have contemplated getting an original many times.

Nice. Yeah you are correct about most 90's presses. Thanks!

It sounds good. I've read in several places online that the originals are CD masters. A lot of stuff from the 90s was. Buy it!
