Thank god it sounds dated! I would hate for this classic to sound contemporary.For that to happen, it would need to have a bog standard offbeat bassline, dubstep breakdown & guest rapper.

An absolute classic progressive trance track from 1998, Stage One deservedly got a commercial release on the consistently excellent Hooj Choons label in early 2000.John Graham's original Separation mix still stands tall as a masterpiece of dark, melodic trance that even in 1998 was a million miles away from the "hands in the air" approach favoured by most of Europe at the time.While keeping the tempo well below "euphoric" levels (running at 132bpm as opposed to the more typical-of-the-time 140bpm), it also kept the sonics subdued while still retaining a sense of urgency that requires great musicianship considering such restraint.However, it is Tilt's Apollo 11 remix that I really want to talk about. I first heard this remix on a Radio One mix on new year's eve 1999. If I remember correctly it was Judge Jules who played it. If I may indulge in a bit of personal story, I was up in my bedroom doing a mix at the time when I decided to call it a day. It was still around a quarter to midnight so I decided to put the radio on to see what they were doing on this momentous occasion. I was greeted with this trance track, so dark and so mysterious. I found this very odd, as I expected to hear some cheesy pop fodder / classic rock anthems that were going to bring in the new millennium.It was Tilt's Apollo 11 remix of Stage One.It simply blew me away, to the extent that I almost forgot to go downstairs to be with my family to welcome in the (now depressingly familiar) new Century!Well, if you have not heard it, it basically takes the original's class but adds a chunky vibe that still totally retains that dark trance feeling. Really though, it's once the breakdown happens at around 4:40 that you fully experience what a remix this is. Lush, mesmerizing and enveloping sounds wrap around you and carry you off to some night scene, much like you'd imagine Blade Runner to be. Uplifting without ever being cheesy, this is in my opinion the pinnacle of Tilt's illustrious catalogue.You will find many, many other remixes of Stage One (notably by Solarstone, Orkidea and Leama & Moor who all made fantastic efforts) but none will ever match Tilt's effort.In my eyes, a highlight of the trance scene.

A number of these were pressed and/or labeled incorrectly. I have one copy that has the wrong label (hooj man drinking a beer instead of in space suit), and another with an error where the "Tilt's Apollo 11 Mix" is actually the "Solar Stone Remix". And even a third copy with both. Hooj was unable to explain what the deal was. To get the actual Tilt mix I had to find the test pressing.

Can confirm, I had a copy that was the Separation mix on the A-side, with the logo of the guy drinking a beer, then on the B-Side the label said it was the Tilt Apollo 11 mix, but it is actually the Solar Stone mix.

This record's ethereal mood will send you straight to the far reaches of your imagination. A phenomenal Deep Trance track. Sasha loves this record.
