Notes
First and criminally little known album from Nottingham's Electric Effect is a great collection of guitar / organ psychedelic pop combining a vast array of influences from Syd Barrett, Beatles, Bowie, Pretty Things and many others, all cooked up in a contemporary sonic broth that prevents it from being merely 'retro for the sake of it'. While the magnificent Atomic Stickman summons up the ghost of Pink Floyd's Lucifer Sam - never a bad thing, it adds to it, modernises it and takes it somewhere newer. Orbit is altogether different story - more like Alpha Centauri period Tangerine Dream redreamt as a post-Thatcherite nightmare! JE Hoover is probably the most obviously 'contemporary' track, with faint echoes of Primal Scream and maybe Beck. The instrumentation and arrangements are first class throughout and the production is fabulous, especially as it is self-produced. Hammond Organs and mellotrons are there in droves, along with Wurlitzers, wobbly telecasters, candy and a current bun. But what makes the album really shine is Gunning's vocals. Tremendous delivery, fabulous melodies and harmonies rivalling any late Beatles record.
The band morphed out of The V-Necks and features Pat Gunning (guitar.vocal), JP Braddock (organs), Neil Hopkinson (bass), Mark Evans (drums) and Dave Langdon (pedal steel). This was a sadly short-lived line-up eventually to split, giving us Mr Gunning's alter ego, Sid Jones, to roam a deeper psychedelic landscape in it's wake. Nevertheless his uniquely 'up' songwriting is in glorious abundance here. Mixed in with the obvious (and not so obvious) sixties reference points are elements of nineties experimentalism to spare us a potentially skilful but pointless history lesson.
