"Mono" is a creation by the people from the Cat Music hit factory (Catapult, Lia Velasco, The Internationals, Rubberen Robbie). The single was packaged to look like an old 1950s recording (yes, the age of mono recordings) and even the text "Her Mother's Choice" on the label is a spoof to the then popular record label "His Master's Voice".

The song copies the chord scheme of M "Pop Muzik" and the phone voice of the Buggles "Video killed the radio star" (and also contains similar adlibs from the latter). Not that much originality here, but for a protest against radio stations playing contentless, repetitive music on it (most notably disco), it is okay.
(in many ways, much popular music in the Netherlands of late 1979, early 1980 truly WAS a drag).
At the same time, technological developments in personal audio were following one after the other and audio equipment manufacturers were in a battle to convince the customer they provided the best possible sound (for the worst possible music...)

The irony is that at the moment I'm writing this, we are three decades later and not that much has changed...
