A criminally underrated 3rd wave ska classic. Tight horn section that is used tastefully combined with great lyrics and delivery. The album begins on a great note with City Limits - "Come on boy, keep up chin now - you don't want to look like a victim / Come on girl it's probably your best bet / Never let em, never let em see you sweat." Other highlights are Juliette, Pablo Can't Take It (at one point in my youth my favorite ska track, now not even my favorite on the album, but still a great song), Jefferson Assembly (my favorite on the album) "Step off the plane / There's no aloha's in greeting / No throngs of taxis / No subway seating / sobered out fields / Visions south of heaven / A tourist's view of Old Detroit left over from '67" and Slow Me Down - an upbeat song about hard but mundane living.And for anyone who was part of the mid/late-90s ska scene in The Lansing-area, the secret track to close the album is the theme song to the unbelievably influential MSU Impact radio show The Two-Tone Beat, which stirred the entire pot (Parka Kings, Aks Momma, Razor Dave, Johnny Utah & The Pointaways, Abe Froman and on and on). Give this album a few listens - it's as good as 3rd wave ska got, and holds up scarily well after 20 years.
Probably would never get a vinyl reissue, unless Asbestos ramped back up and was interested. If only... I would spin it regularly!
Couldn't agree more! On a family trip to Detroit in the 90s, my punk cousin took me to an independent record store and helped me pick this out, along with MU330 Chumps on Parade and Less Than Jake Losing Streak. One of those moments that seriously changed my life forever.Bienvenidos still holds up, WELL! Such a classic and I feel honored to have discovered it as a kid.
