Translator were a fairly obscure 80s college rock band, probably inspired by things like the mid to late 70s New York/CBGB scene, the Velvet Underground, the Byrds, and a dash of UK Post-Punk. On this album, they retain a sense of edginess and energy that was lost on subsequent recordings due to inferior, dated 80s production. The first track is a dead ringer for a Modern Lovers outtake minus the organ and there are even a couple moments where they try out a more rhythmic approach reminiscent of Gang of Four. Most of the time the guitars focus on a jangly sound though. The main singer has a smooth, somewhat deep voice that works well on the chorus harmonies. There are a couple weak moments, but the album is pretty consistent as a whole. Fortunately, this has been reissued on CD recently, so there's really no reason not to pick it up if you're into this kind of thing.
