In The Mix 97 features the greats of late '96 as this was literally released just after the new year. Unfortunately, it is nowhere near as good as any of the previous albums in the series and is a disappointment for me, despite having some great aspects. The problem I have with this are the tracks they used, as while some are fantastic, others are almost terrible so that being said, In The Mix 97 is the first underwhelming performer in the series. The first CD includes the greats of One & One by Robert Miles, Garbage's Stupid Girl, Kim English's Nite Life, George Michael's Spinning The Wheel, Hold That Sucker Down by The O.T. Quartet, a favourite in Up To No Good by The Porn Kings, Zee's Say My Name and Chakra's I Am. Most of the second half really lets it down as it descends into late 90's cheese and feels out of place in a way as the first half is genuinely serious. Atlantic Ocean's Waterfall is actually a great tune but the Work In Progress remix is just bad, and I am not a huge fan of Rob Tissera's Kick Up The Volume or Wildchild's Jump To My Beat. Why did they re-use Tin Tin Out's All I Wanna Do (Bingo Bango Remix) from In The Mix 96 Vol. 3? The mixing is very long winded, slow and boring in some places and I hate to say all of this because I used to love this CD, now I still like it but it has flaws. While the first CD is a bit disappointing, the second.. is also disappointing and more so. It is overly slow throughout, and we have some tracks that are really poor including CJ Boland's Sugar Is Sweeter, Blur's Girls And Boys, Jamiroquai's Space Cowboy which I hate with a passion, Fine Young Cannibals She Drives Me Crazy (what the heck?) and the Dex & Jonesy Remix of B.B.E's Seven Days And One Week. While the rest of the CD has a few good tracks, the flaws tend to show more than the positive aspect and the entire experience is incredibly weak, underwhelming and depressing. While there are some good hits near the end, it still feels quite underwhelming because of the flaws and lack of positive aspects earlier. It just isn't a good journey at all to be honest.Overall, it is good but definitely one of the weaker 'In The Mix' releases when compared to the others. The first CD is quite good if slightly disappointing but the second unfortunately drags the score down to barely a 3 star. It is an average album in my opinion, with some great aspects, as well as flaws.

It's 1997 and I think I can pull myself away from the early 95/96 'mix at 6:30pm' mixes that Simon and Charlie did for Radio one. Which means I can listen to this CD a little more objectively than I did the previous three. CD1 I really really enjoyed this mix. As usual the mixing is near perfect and dotted with interesting mixes using loops rather than just a straight crossfade. it flows quite naturally through house and trance and keeps the energy most of the way through, helped at the start by editing out the breakdown of one and one so that the energy starts out high. There are only a couple of duds - I've never liked 'Waterfall' and 'All I Wanna Do' is equally repetative and the only good version of Up To No Good is the VS DJ Surpreme version from 98(ish). The rest of it is brilliant though, nite life is the best track on the CD. Love that track!CD2 is a bit of a let down after CD1. The start of the CD is a little rocky and whilst there are some good tracks there, it didn't pick up for me until about halfway through with Sasha - Arkham Asylum. Brilliant mix of Dreamer, and like the breakdown of One and One on CD1 it's been dabbled with. This time the beats from the start of the song are dropped at the breakdown to help keep the flow of the mix moving, shortening the breakdown. But then its back to good song/mediocre song/bad song..eh. Just a bit messy overall, and quite a few tracks they could have dropped and replaced with much better ones.My rating system:(322 out of 500) which isn't a bad score, but it's mostly CD1 that got it up that 'high'.

I have re-reviewed this one, and my score has gone down yet again. I feel that the track-list makes up for the majority of the problem, and this release is definitely one of the weaker ones overall.

Actually I take that back; just checked and there IS no notification for replies to reviews...but just noticed the 'notify me' checkbox. Huh, that's kind of annoying. :/

Hi Dj_JasonB - Aye, I do realise that, of course...surely that's common knowledge. I mean I would have thought it would be...especially to us discogers!Anyway, to me It's what makes In The Mix stand out so well when put up against other commercially aimed compilations. If I remember correctly the computer software in question, at the time, was Pro Tools; Charlie and Simon would sometimes have to rip the vinyls to the PC first if they didn't have the digital copies, I'm sure I remember Charlie saying that is why the quality dips on some tracks (depsite the secondary mastering). Back to them standing out from other Studio mixes, I mention that because they're a funny thing really, you've got other commercially aimed mix compilatons, like the early Big Mix series which were clearly software mixed also, but for some astounding reason they still managed to balls it up! Haha.I digress though, I'm solely a vinyl DJ, been through several sets of decks over the years but the bottom line (for me) with mix compilations is purely and simply whether I enjoy the music and the mix, I couldn't care less how the end result was achieved..vinyl, cd, software etc. :)In answer to your second question - I've been reviewing under the 'vinyl/contributions' account, but answering this my CD account (I'm the same person, honest!) I've got quite a few mix CDs and a very very bad memory, so I decided to come up with a rather daft and convoluted method of ranking them in Excel. If you're genuinely interested I could give you a run down on how it works and the formulas I use...but here's an older much less filled out version of the sheet.http://www.triquatra.co.uk/compilationratings.xlsxtechnically it's still out of 5, it's just i've knocked the decimal place around. So a compilation would actually be 2.78 out of 5. But I thought that 278 out of 500 looks better than 2.79 out of 5.00Not that that part is reeeeeally for anyone else, I'm just chilling in my down time, enjoying the music.Anyway! I've found it's a nice way to relax and get things a little more straight in my head. As in, it saves pulling out a CD to put on which I had forgotton was mostly crap, and helped me re-remember some real gems (like Club Buzz!). Hoping at the end of it I'll have things all nice and organised in my head (and more importantly in excel..where I won't forget things)Also, sorry about the late reply, I don't have notifications turned on and only happened across your reply when I came to check if I'd done the cover scans for this one! :D

you do realise the reason its all been edited and sounds perfect is because they mixed the comps using computer software?. Also what kind of rating system is out of 500?!
