While some of these excerpts are quite remarkable, the collection itself seems to lack consistency.. as usual in these kind of records, there are some that I want more of and others I could do without..I could do more of Asanti ceremonial drummers, for instance, but I'm not sure if I need more 'polly put the kettle on' (is that supposed to represent Uganda?) The sleeve notes by Joseph Prostakoff state that 'a consistent homogeneity in the use of instruments and creative procedure is found among he black nations of Africa' and goes on to compare this with a large diversity in other cultural traits, citing language as an example.. I dunno 'bout all that, but what I notice, is that while I cannot understand all nation's speech, I can (just about) get the music, especially folk, of all humans.. I am reminded of the account in the book of Genesis where in chapter 11 people were scattered around the world because they could not understand each others' speech.. in music is a potential path to unity ..
