Rob Gordon is probably best known as one of the co-founders of the iconic Warp label, but he was actually part of the first release too. Here, he gathers together a number of his works and collaborations for a snapshot of his work as an whole. The tracks he brings as part of the A1 Project derive mostly from Detroit, from the futuristic "Round 2" to the cool breaks of "Phraid," which makes "Tonic Not Toxic" sound simplistic in comparison, though the brisk dancehall of "Tun Dem" comes as a pleasant surprise. The Forgemasters, of course, are a glorious throwback to old skool techno, from "Clap Your Hands" to the throbbing "Presence." He takes up with David Moufang as View to View, and "Heptagon" has a sparse, airy feel, almost ambient, while "Seven Hills" has more acid. His track with Richie Hawtin, "Slowgroove," is both mellow and melodic, and his solo work, as Black Knight, has a more angular feel, as "Capita" skews more abstract and "Rungatung" sidles into jazz. But unwilling to be pinned down "Love Promise" and "Moody" sound as old-school as all get-out. A nice, varied collection.
