The single King of the World has first been released in November 1989 in the U.S. and in 1990 to the rest of the world, excluding Britain. It has been first released and filed under the ‘Old Nick’ artist name outside the UK. It was first released in Britain the following year. The video was banned by MTV due to the coming Gulf War. The rather chaotic video included footage of war and violent sports. It was then re-released in 1992 in the UK and in 1993 the same-titled album ‘King of the World’ has been released featuring the single ‘WWW’ an early insight into the web.

As a single "King of the World" reached the top of 9 college charts in the U.S. and was number one on several French radio stations. The magazine Billboard described the album as: "Digital sound with some remnant of indie rock. Virtual Alien AKA Old Nick. He's back and still fascinated by his occult."
