My high functioning *whatever* younger brother finding this guy in the early '80s almost makes up for all the mid-'70s Neil Diamond Columbia dreck I had to endure on his stereo. Was "Buckingham Blues" a salvaged parody attempt at John Cougar (Mellencamp)'s song, "Jack & Diane"?
Yes, and Al got turned down because Cougar was afraid of a parody "mucking up" a potential deal to make a "Jack & Diane" movie: https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/princess-diana-why-you-never-got-to-hear-weird-al-yankovics-1st-parody-of-her.html/
